About

The Reading Group in Contemporary Russian Culture is a cross-disciplinary forum for discussing developments in Russian society and culture since 1990. We aim to discover links and confluences between formally disparate research fields, cultural genres and media, within the experiential framework of modern Russia.  For the first hour of our meeting, one or two invited speakers will give papers relating a broadly relevant theme to a specific area of cultural studies (e.g. anthropology or music). A general discussion will follow for the second hour.  All speakers present in English. The seminars are open to both Russianists and non-Russianists: if you are interested in any aspect of modern cultural studies, please come along. Wine will be served.

Our speakers include anthropologists, art historians, sociologists, political scientists, archaeologists, and cultural historians, among many others. For Michaelmas Term 2008, we offer sessions on diverse themes including political change, fashion culture and gay rights in post-Soviet Russia. A conference embracing all the topics covered in our seminar series is planned for September 2009.

On Dec 11-12 2009 CRASSH is hosting a workshop 'Russia on Edge: Reclaiming the Periphery in Contemporary Russian Culture' dedicated to the themes discussed during the seminar.
