Research Culture seminar

Sabina Leonelli (Professor of Philosophy and History of Science, University of Exeter)
Summary
Open Science is often presented as a solution to the multiple problems afflicting contemporary scientific practices, ranging from lack of reproducibility to dubious review procedures, inefficient communications and lack of transparency around methods and circumstances of research. Much of the debate around Open Science and how it should be implemented verges, however, on the use of the natural sciences – and particularly biomedicine – as a reference point. In this talk, I challenge this assumption, propose an alternative understanding of the ideas of openness and transparency, and suggest ways to value the humanities, arts and social sciences as role models for at least some aspects of Open Science implementation.

About the seminar series
Co-hosted by CRASSH and the University’s Research Culture Team, this new series will feature fortnightly panel discussions on key questions relating to research culture and open research. What models should we be developing for open research in the arts, social sciences, and humanities? Why should I consider an open access publisher for my monograph, and how does it work? How do we create a positive research culture in our departments, centres or faculties (what would one look like)? How should research be evaluated?
All are welcome to help us debate these questions (and more). A series of short position statements by invited speakers will set out some of the challenges and opportunities we face at the moment, and then the floor will be open for questions and other contributions.
We would encourage you to take part in person if you can. A Zoom link will be provided to participants who are not based in Cambridge or cannot attend for other reasons.

Biographies
Sabina Leonelli is Professor of Philosophy and History of Science at the University of Exeter, Director of the Centre for the Study of the Life Sciences (Egenis), lead of the “Data Governance, Ethics and Openness” strand of the Exeter Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Principal Investigator for the project “A Philosophy of Open Science for Diverse Research Environments” (www.opensciencestudies.eu). Her research interests span data modelling, governance and AI-powered analysis across the biological, environmental and health sciences; and open science and related transformations in the global research landscape. Her latest book on Open Science (2023) can be downloaded from Cambridge University Press in Open Access format. From September 2024, Leonelli will be Professor of Philosophy and History of Science and Technology at the Technical University of Munich.
