About

The theme we have selected for 2014/2015 is affect, with particular attention to affect, responsiveness and transition in relation to the issues of training, education and activism. The approach is two-fold: we will explore affective states represented in Screen Media and affect as one of the aspects of response to moving image artworks. Our theoretical and historical approaches cut across psychoanalytic, cognitivist, historicist and political approaches to the media. Where affect is receiving much attention in social theory and cultural studies currently, the particular intersection between affect and theorisations of moving image media, and their effects, has been less widely discussed. Affect theory in its attention to shifts and conflict, and in its situation between mind and body, has advantages for thought about reception, response and influence in relation to screen media. The topic will be foregrounded in particular through attention to modes of behaviour – education, training, activism – which inculcate change.
