The Open Knowledge Summer School in the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities is a fully-funded, week-long, multi-subject residential in July 2023.

This is the second summer school of the ARTEFACT project, funded by the European Research Council. This year’s theme is ‘After the Green Revolution: The Science and Politics of Sustainable Food-Systems in the Anthropocene’, featuring a range of approaches from the History of Science and Technology, Politics and International Studies, Land Economics, the History of Food, Agriculture, and Public Health, Agro-ecology, Bioengineering, and the applied arts.

This summer school will take place from 24 to 28 July 2023 and is convened by Dr. Inanna Hamati-Ataya. It is organised by gloknos, the Centre for Global Knowledge Studies, in collaboration with the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) and the Global Food Security Interdisciplinary Research Centre (GFS), at the University of Cambridge.

We aim to host 12 highly-able students, from the UK and abroad, who are currently enrolled in postgraduate studies (Masters or PhD) or have just completed their undergraduate studies. If you have a strong academic performance to date, a motivation to pursue an academic or non-academic career related to the summer school’s themes, we strongly encourage you to apply regardless of your current field of study.

Selected students will benefit from an optimal learning experience with advanced researchers and teachers from the University of Cambridge and other UK and European universities, as well as scientists from the biotech sector, food journalists, and artists, through a combination of participatory seminars and practical, hands-on activities that will bring the subject to life and introduce participants to a diverse range of perspectives, methodologies, and sites of scientific and scholarly learning. In addition to the core curriculum, which includes a visit to a local organic farm, students will have the opportunity to explore the University’s extracurricular activities and visit Cambridge’s many educational and cultural sites, while enjoying a week of communal life at Wolfson College.

There are no fees for attendance, and we will cover the costs of your accommodation at Wolfson College and three meals a day, and reimburse your travel expenses for economy-rate return journeys to Cambridge from your current place of residence or study.
