Virgelina Chará (Afro-Colombian Human Rights defender and social activist)
About the speaker
Virgelina Chará is an Afro-Colombian Human Rights defender and social activist whose personal, family, and socio-political trajectory has been marked by the Colombian internal conflict and forced displacement. Following forced displacement in the 2000s, she became one of Colombia’s most vocal social leaders on intersectional claims of gender, political, race, and victims justice in Colombia and Latin America. She is the founder and director of the social organisation Asomujer y Trabajo, that focuses on women’s integral development, and of the Costurero de la Memoria, based in Bogotá, a social organisation run by women victims of the internal conflict that focuses on the critical recuperation of conflict (hi)stories and collective practices of healing, cutting across different ethnic groups, regions of origin, and genders.
She is the protagonist of the documentary film Por Que Cantan Las Aves (2017) by Alejandra Quintana and Adrián Villa. The film reveals how through music, sewing and planting, three Afro-descendant women victims of the armed conflict in Colombia strengthen the construction of memory. Three Afro-Colombian social leaders sing to heal and denounce the violence in Colombia that alienated them from their territories in the Pacific region. The documentary follows their daily lives in Bogotá, where they arrived to seek refuge. Little by little their voices find each other, like migratory birds that have turned their songs into nests, in territories where they can resist and heal despite the perduring violence of the internal conflict and structural racism.

Her talk will touch upon the themes of the documentary as well as on the politics of life amidst war and Afro-Colombian women resistance and everyday place-making. The Q&A will be moderated by Dr Giulia Torino. Please note that this will be a bilingual event, in Spanish and English simultaneously.
Virgelina Chará es una defensora de derechos humanos y activista social afrocolombiana cuya trayectoria personal, familiar y sociopolítica ha estado marcada por el conflicto interno y el desplazamiento forzado. Luego del desplazamiento forzado en la década de 2000, se convirtió en una de las líderes sociales más activas en Colombia en tema de justicia de género, política, de raza y para las víctimas en Colombia y América Latina. Es fundadora y directora de la organización social Asomujer y Trabajo, que se enfoca en el desarrollo integral de la mujer, y del Costurero de la Memoria, una organización social dirigida por mujeres víctimas de la guerra que se enfoca en la recuperación de la(s) historia(s) de conflicto y en prácticas colectivas de curación que atraviesan diferentes grupos étnicos, regiones de origen y géneros.

Catalina Henao has a degree in Foreign Language Teaching (English and French) from Universidad del Valle. She has been an English teacher for sixteen years in institutions like Berlitz Colombia SA (Cali), Centro Cultural Colombo Americano (Cali), and Centro Cultural Argentino Norte Americano (ICANA, in Buenos Aires). As an interpreter, she has worked with Fundacion Carvajal, The Reggio Emilia Institutet, The American Film Showcase, and the Smithsonian Institution. As a translator, she has worked for Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia and Northamerican writer Tim Keppel, whose work has been published by Random House Colombia. She is currently pursuing a specialization in literary translation at Universidad de Buenos Aires.
