Harnessing the power of Big Data to understand collective action

This workshop will introduce participants to concepts, methods and procedures for aggregating scattered information about protest activities from news and political event databases, and converting it into structured data capable of being analysed both by human and machine interpreters. Through presentations and a lab session, participants will cover concepts in Protest Event Analysis, stages of data collection and data analysis. We will explore the data structure of large Political Event Databases, and learn how to make a meaningful analysis in Excel, STATA and/or Tableau. Participants will also undertake a collective exercise in coding for Protest Event Analysis, see a demonstration of online data collection on a news aggregator (LexisNexis and/or Factiva) and transform the unstructured information into a structured set of variables.
