Description

Film screening and discussion:
Waltz with Bashir (2008) by film director Ari Folman

This term's second event will be a screening of the animated war documentary film ‘Waltz with Bashir’ which depicts Ari Folman (director, producer and screenwriter) in search of his lost memories as an Israeli soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War. ‘Waltz with Bashir’ deploys a variety of visual technologies that include photographs, drawn images in graphic novel form, and the moving images in which the former two are embedded. By emphasizing how perception, vision, memory and history can be retrospectively constructed, ‘Waltz with Bashir’ poses key questions about visual technologies’ representational strategies and their capacity to verify facts or to reveal their fictionality. After the screening, we will host a guided discussion with the audience members, where thought-provoking questions will be posed.
