Description

Schnitzler's Hidden Manuscripts: Arthur Schnitzler, his Cambridge Manuscripts, his European Experience
17-18 November 2006
CRASSH, 17 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX

This conference, which takes place on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Austrian novelist and playwright Arthur Schnitzler's death, aims to shed new light on his oeuvre and his time by focusing on his as yet largely unpublished literary legacy preserved in Cambridge University Library. The conference will coincide with an exhibition of Schnitzler manuscrips at the Library.

Some papers will specifically address the importance of the University Library material for a new interpretation of his work and will encourage research on it. Other papers aim to shed light on Schnitzler's and the Austrian literary intelligentsia's openness towards European culture.

The conference will also present the state of the art of international research on Schnitzler and will facilitate co-ordinaton of international scholarship by bringing together the major experts in the field from all over the world.

The event aims to bridge the gap between artistic production and critical scholrship, and thus bring together different types of audience and the interests of both experts and laymen.
