Hannah Baker is a Research Associate on the project ‘Expertise Under Pressure’ (EuP), funded by the Humanities and Social Change International Foundation.
The aim of Hannah’s research is to explore the use of expert advice in emergency situations both domestic and international. An example being the UK’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) which provides scientific and technical advice to support government decision-makers during emergencies. She is researching how experts are selected to give advice, the processes that are undertaken to convert these expert opinions into action and how the uncertainty associated with these decisions is taken into account.
Hannah’s PhD research, at the University of Cambridge’s Engineering Department, focused on the decision to demolish or adapt existing buildings on urban development projects. This utilised her multi-disciplinary background in Architecture and Town Planning. Her work explored this decision from multiple stakeholder perspectives and analysed case studies in the UK, Netherlands and Australia. Hannah’s other case study within the EuP project explores whether there is a difference in how experts view heritage compared to different community groups.
Hannah has also worked as a consultant in the ‘Risk team’ at Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd, with projects ranging across different disasters in the built environment.
