About

Dr. Trenholme Junghans is a Research Associate for “The Limits of the Numerical” and a Fellow of Girton College.  She received her PhD from the University of St. Andrews, where she was jointly supervised in Social Anthropology and Management.  She is broadly interested in understanding the world-making propensities of processes of abstraction and classification, of quantification and commensuration.  Her PhD examined the moral economies and semiotic ideologies associated with varying approaches to “quality” and “quality improvement” in contemporary healthcare.  As a member of the “Limits of the Numerical” team she will conduct ethnographic research on the derivation, uses, and effects of Quality-Adjusted-Life-Years (QALYs) in British healthcare.

Trenholme’s interests and experience are broadly interdisciplinary in scope, spanning contemporary social theory, Science and Technology Studies, semiotic and linguistic anthropology, and political economy.  She holds an MPhil in Cultural Anthropology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), and an undergraduate degree in History from Smith College.  She has also received training in psychodynamic psychotherapy from the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, and has conducted extensive anthropological research in Hungary.
