8 Mar 2022 14:00 - 16:00 Online

Description

This online public event accompanies the application-only Cultural Heritage Data School at the University of Cambridge. It will provide a space for reflection and discussion on how collection-holding institutions and researchers deal with the challenges of presenting archival materials from collections formed by or about colonial institutions.

This discussion of the colonial past and present of archives will include points of view from both ends of the colonial experience, with the purpose of eliciting education, research, policy-making and political debate that is conducive to better practice in the Cultural Heritage sector and play a role in countering historic injustices.

Join our panel of experts for presentations and a round-table discussion drawing on the experiences of current projects connecting researchers, educators and archival professionals in this area. Key questions we’ll be addressing will include:

  • How can the re-contextualisation of archival materials address issues of historic injustice?
  • How can we address the colonial past of archives beyond simple memory preservation?
  • What role can participatory education and research methodologies play in decolonising colonial archives?
  • What are the challenges and possibilities related to engaging in political debates over this issue?

Speakers will include:

  • Dr Dorothy Kyagaba Sebbowa, Lecturer at the School of Education, Makerere University
  • Dr Jessica Parr, Assistant Professor at Simmons University and Global Team Lead of Programming Historian
  • Dr Marta Musso, Research Manager Archives Portal Europe
  • Dr Siddharth Soni, Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities
  • Dr Anne Alexander, Director of CDH Learning
  • Dr Irving Huerta, Research Associate and Convenor of CDH’s Data Schools
