8 Nov 2017 5:00pm - 7:00pm Seminar Room SG2, Alison Richard Building

Description

A Conversation with,
Alexia Singh (Save the Children, Reuters, Magnum) and
Eliot Higgins (Bellingcat, Brown Moses Blog)

This week’s event will offer attendees the opportunity to dialogue with industry professionals involved in the production of documentary imagery and journalistic knowledge. The event will proceed with two short presentations followed by an open audience Q and A.

Alexia Singh, Multimedia Producer for Save the Children, will begin by discussing her experience working with Reuters and will guide the audience through a series of critical activities designed to equip attendees with skills in better decoding and understanding news images. Through his work in digital verification and investigative journalism, Eliot Higgins will then talk us through how we can become better citizen journalists. He will explore how, by recognizing the political contexts of media, and appreciating the potential deceptiveness of metadata, ordinary citizens can aid the process of truth-telling in an era where claim-making is under particular scrutiny and doubt.
