The 'Abbasid dynasty came to power in 750 and founded Baghdad in 762, from where they ruled most of the known world. The 'Abbasid Caliphate came to an end in 1258 when the Mongols sacked Baghdad.

The School of `Abbasid Studies, originally founded as a cooperative venture by scholars at the Universities of St. Andrews and Glasgow in Scotland during the 1980s, is an international enterprise hosted by the Universities of St. Andrews, Cambridge and Leuven. It aims to promote, foster and cultivate the academic study of the `Abbasid dynasty.

This is the ninth meeting of the School and the second to be hosted by Cambridge. From the 7th to the 9th of July some twenty scholars will discuss myriad facets of 'Abbasid society, from justified sin to the 'internal senses', from courtly
culture to the religious sciences.
