About

Gabriele Badano is a Political Philosopher and a Bioethicist who took his PhD from the Department of Philosophy at University College London. He is currently a Research Associate on the Limits of the Numerical Project at CRASSH as well as a Fellow of Girton College. The Limits of the Numerical Project focuses on the use of quantitative tools in health care policy, with special attention to the use of Quality-Adjusted Life Years to measure the value of alternative allocations of NHS resources. One of the aims of the Project is to investigate the impact of the introduction of such tools on a range of affected parties. At a philosophical level, the Project aims to explore whether quantitative tools fully capture the values that they are supposed to promote, to what extent their use is bound to work against important values that resist quantification and how existing methods for reasoning about quantifiable and non-quantifiable considerations in health care policy can be improved.

Gabriele has  research interests in the ethical aspects of the distribution of health care resources above and beyond the use of quantitative tools. For example, he is interested in the debate over the special importance of healthcare for justice and in the possible uses of the framework of public justification as a guide for allocation decisions. He is also interested in a range of other issues in Political Philosophy, such as the strengths and weaknesses of the work of John Rawls and, in particular, of his theory of political liberalism.
