Professor Bill Byrne is Co-Director of the project ‘Giving Voice to Digital Democracies: The Social Impact of Artificially Intelligent Communications Technology’, funded by the Humanities and Social Change International Foundation.
Having studied at Cornell University, Michigan State University, and the University of Maryland, Bill conducted research in various sub-fields of speech technology at Johns Hopkins University before joining the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University in 2004, where he is currently Professor of Information Engineering. His research focuses on statistical modelling techniques for speech and language processing, and he has worked on a variety of search and estimation algorithms for speech recognition, speech synthesis, and machine translation. The objective of this work is to develop models and algorithms that make it possible for computers to extract information from the large amounts of speech and text that are now available in digital form. These modelling procedures make it possible to transcribe speech, to synthesize speech from text, and to translate from one language into another.
