Dr Will Sweetman (University of Otago, New Zealand)

Will Sweetman is Senior Lecturer in Asian Religions at the University of Otago, New Zealand. His doctoral research at Cambridge examined accounts of Hinduism in English, Dutch, German and French writers from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. During his tenure of a Smuts Visiting Fellowship in Commonwealth Studies at Cambridge in 2009-10 he is writing a book on Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg’s Genealogie der malabarischen Götter (1713). Beginning with Ziegenbalg’s textual sources, the book examines the development of European attitudes to Hinduism by examining the reception of Ziegenbalg’s work in Europe over two centuries.
