Dr. Raf Gelders (Ghent University, Belgium)

Raf Gelders is a Research Associate in the research centre of Comparative Science of Cultures at Ghent University. He has a PhD in the Comparative Science of Cultures from Ghent University and a MPhil in Indian History from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. Raf’s interests lie in the cross-cultural interactions between Asia and Europe in the early-modern period, 16th to 19th centuries. His doctoral thesis examined the European representations of India in Dutch, English, French and German sources through the early modern era, with a particular focus on the interrelationship between Christian thought and the European understanding of non-Semitic traditions. Raf has published in the Comparative Studies in Society and History and his forthcoming projects include an essay on Indian traditions in European thought, the publication of his PhD dissertation, and an annotated bibliography of early modern writing about India.
