DFID and Disaster Risk Reduction Programmes: An illustration of the Risk Society Thesis?
This presentation will focus on new programmes by DfID in Sub-Saharan Africa, “disaster risk reduction programmes” which attempt to shift donor driven aid from humanitarian relief to long term risk development planning in relation to droughts and famine. In analyzing the tension and divides between risk societies (centre) and risk environments (periphery), we will seek to understand to what extent these programmes create a bridge or a greater disconnect between concerns in reflective societies and developing countries.
