East Carolina University: '“Commerces” and “esclavages” in the Histoire'

The relationship between the representations of commerce and the representations of slavery in the Histoire remains relatively unexplored. Independently, these two concepts and problems for the work’s many authors and their readers have received recent scholarly attention.  Yet, this paper will argue that they are best understood when considered as mutually constitutive concerns for the Histoirians.  This interpretation allows us to reconsider the theory of imperialism in the Histoire while also shedding light on the complex mode of textual and political production it represents.
