Christian Illies' academic teaching and research have dwelt upon moral philosophy, and philosophy of technology and science (esp. biology). Another focus is philosophy of culture, in particular philosophy of the built environment.
He wrote, together with V. Hösle, a monograph on Darwin (Freiburg 1999, revised edition Bamberg 2005), and is author of The Grounds of Ethical Judgement (Oxford University Press, 2003), and of Philosophische Anthropologie im biologischen Zeitalter (Suhrkamp 2006). Illies is also co-editor of Darwinism and Philosophy, (University of Notre Dame Press 2005).
While at CRASSH, Christian Illies will work on issues in the philosophy of the built environment; in particular he wants to explore the notions of 'irony' and 'authenticity' in contemporary architecture.
