The Spatial Location of Valcamonica Rock-Art
Craig Alexander (Archaeology, Cambridge)
My research focuses on the locational choices – the creation of place – made by the Iron Age people of Valcamonica, Italy when they created incised rock-art panels in the landscape. Theoretically, I draw on time geography, agency/practice theory and actor-network theory. The tools used are GIS – ArcGIS, GRASS and IDRISI – and network analysis. Questions addressed include the properties of the sites chosen and their relationships with each other, with habitations and with other types of cult site. Additionally, intra-site spatial analysis addresses the choice of particular rock surfaces within a given site.
