Fleeting Phantom: Sheila Legge

Little is known about Sheila Legge, other than that she anonymously posed for photographs in Trafalgar Square in on 11 June 1936, as a prelude of the opening of the International Surrealist Exhibition at nearby New Burlington Galleries. Anecdotally Legge’s appearance in central London has been perceived not only as a tableau vivant created by Dalí, but also as her total contribution to surrealism. This paper aims to collate the sparse extant evidence that suggests that Legge had surpassed the role of ‘model’ and had gone on to engage actively with the movement, both in creativity and personal commitment.
