Cities have always reflected the human imagination; from Plato's Republic to Howard's Garden City. Some are planned while others grow
incrementally, yet all are expressions of the imagination of those who govern, design,
inhabit, contest, and compliment these urban spaces. As cities across the globe
confront today’s challenges, variegated understandings of the urban condition
converge to produce new visions, collaborations and contestations for the
future. Today’s socio-economic realities inform new ‘urban imaginaries’, as individuals
as well as institutions seek to envision an alternative urban future to meet
the challenges of the 21st Century,
In 2012 -2013 the City Seminar continues to explore the city by examining the potential of the human imagination as it engages utopian and dystopian visions of urban environments around the world. Bringing together theorists and practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, City Seminar hopes to provide a platform for discussion, research and networking for an audience interested in all things urban.
