Conference Review

Contemporary Muslim Cosmopolitanisms

19-20 October 2007

The conference aimed to bring together scholars working in different disciplines to interrogate the notion of cosmopolitanism through a focus on contemporary Muslim societies. It raised important questions about the socio-political context in which notions of cosmopolitanism have gained some salience in recent years. At the same time, by discussing specific situations and contexts in urban and rural Middle East, South Asia and South East Asia, the various contributors highlighted the dynamic and fluid nature of contemporary Muslim life.

While an academic publisher and a journal has approached the conference organizers about publishing conference proceedings, for now there are no concrete plans.
