Cambridge Psychoanalysis Reading Group

Tuesdays in Term, 12.45 - 14.00
Location: SG2, Alison Richard Building, 7 West Road

The Reading Group has been meeting under the auspices of CRASSH since 2001 to bring together researchers and teachers from across the disciplines in the arts, humanities, social sciences and elsewhere. The core activity of the Group is a weekly reading group devoted to papers and texts circulated in advance, and this is supplemented by the organization of conferences and by participation in a network of like-minded researchers outside Cambridge. Themes over past years have included terror, visual art and architecture, cinematic fantasy, group psychologies, and migration. Graduate students, teaching staff and researchers are welcome to join the Group. To do so, contact Andrew Webber (German/MML) or John Forrester (History and Philosopy of Science).

The readings are posted on the individual webpages for each meeting.

Welcome to Easter Term. As we agreed last term, in the four sessions when we will be meeting this term, we will be reading most of Judith Butler's The Psychic Life of Power. Theories in Subjection (Stanford, CA: Stanford U.P., 1997). In the final meeting of last term, we read the 'Introduction' (pp. 1-30). The weekly reading for the next four meetings will be:
30th April      Chapter 2 'Circuits of Bad Conscience. Nietzsche and Freud', pp. 63-82
7th May Chapter 3 'Subjection, Resistance, Resignification. Between Freud and Foucault', pp. 83-105
14th May        Chapter 4 '"Conscience Doth Make Subjects of Us All" Althusser's Subjection; pp. 106-131
21st May        Chapter 5 'Melancholy Gender/Refused Identification. Keeping It Moving' 132-151, followed by 'Commentary on Judith Butler', by Adam Phillips, pp. 151-159 and 'Reply to Adam Phillips' pp. 160-166
