Dr Terry Wright
University of Ulster
Terence Wright is Reader in Theoretical Studies in Visual Art at the University of Ulster where he specialises in lens-based and interactive media. He recently produced and directed The Interactive Village (2007): a digital ethnography for broadband delivery as part of ‘NM2’ (New Millennium, New Media EU-funded research project: www.ist-nm2.org). His current research includes a FUSION (cross-border creative & digital media economic development project) production forming part of the Northern Ireland Peace Process. The project will result in two prototype pilot demonstrators providing interactive mobile media guides to the Drogheda Viaduct (built in 1855) and the site of the Battle of the Boyne of 1690. The overall aim of the productions is to enable visitors to access multi-perspective, contested or contradictory histories as well as myth, legend and conjecture.
While at CRASSH, using the prototype Irish history guides as case studies, Dr Wright will make an exploration of the wider theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects of the representation of contested histories, identity and heritage and their contemporary political ramifications. In particular, he will assess the role and benefits of visualisation in the formation of community identity and in fostering social cohesion.
