This interdisciplinary conference aims to bring together researchers working on political actors and forms of representation in contemporary Latin America, in order examine how diverse actors (differentiated along lines of race, gender, form of organisation, and identity) are made present and visible in the region’s political institutions and political cultures. Moving beyond a representational analysis that focuses on either the visual/discursive as a discrete realm or the formal routes for (electoral) representation, the conference aims to establish a framework for analysis that documents the specific geographical and symbolic sites within which subjects are present or presented, and an analysis of the places where presence is permitted, acknowledged or even celebrated. Such a framework rests upon an understanding of the embodied, situated and performative dimensions of political presence, and the grid of legibility through which subjects’ presence is established, marked and reproduced.
