Achal Prabhala is a writer and researcher in Bangalore. He works on intellectual property and its application to medicine and knowledge and has recently completed parallel studies on patenting of pharmaceuticals in India, South Africa and Brazil, examining what defines patentable matter in law and in practice. He will discuss the outcomes of this study as well as the broader social and political history of the access to medicines movement and its current status with the impact of intellectual property reforms and international free trade agreements. Achal is also a member of the expert advisory group of the Medicines Patent Pool.
