16 May 2018 12:00pm - 2:00pm Seminar Room SG2, Alison Richard Building

Description

Prerona Prasad (Exhibitions Officer and Gallery Supervisor at Heong Gallery, Downing College)

For this interactive seminar, we invite Prerona Prasad, Exhibitions Officer and Gallery Supervisor at Heong Gallery, Downing College, to introduce and discuss Ai Weiwei’s work, with a focus on his recent controversial images of the European refugee crisis. Ms Prasad recently hosted Ai Weiwei's trees and cubes installation at Downing and is therefore familiar with his portfolio. With Ms Prasad’s guidance, we will view both the iconic image of the drowned Syrian refugee child Aylan Kurdi, and Ai Weiwei's fraught political reconstruction of the same image. (See here and here.)

The guest speaker will guide the audience through a response and discussion to artist’s work, with special attention paid to addressing the question of whether art can operate as an effective form of aesthetically charged political activism.
