Description

Film screening

followed by a discussion with the Director, Johanne Ihle.

The film “Men of Words” explores how an ancient tradition of exchanging poetry on the Arabian Peninsula is still used as a means to discuss contemporary social and political issues in Yemen. Touching upon issues such as the social meaning of words in Yemen, circulation of the spoken word in a modern context, and art as a way to obtain freedom of speech, the film opens up for debate that might be of interest to scholars within the fields of visual and linguistic anthropology, translation studies, folklore, and Middle Eastern studies.

“Men of Words” is produced by Johanne Ihle and was her graduation film in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester.
