Who we are
This reading group meets informally
on Mondays during term. The aim of the reading group is to bring
together graduates (and early career researchers) from different
faculties and departments interested in a broad range of issues related
to reproduction. Currently we have members from Social Anthropology,
Social and Political Sciences, History, History and Philosophy of
Science, Centre for Family Research and Geography - and we welcome
interested researchers from all disciplines!
What we read
In our selected readings we try to
maintain a balance between 'seminal' readings from various disciplines
on the broad academic field of 'reproduction' and more recent or
controversial pieces, as well as between theoretical material and
empirical pieces. The reading material is very much determined and
steered by the interests of current members. We usually read two pieces
a week, which in some way complement each-other, and take turns in
nominating readings. Some of the topics we have explored in the past
include: Second-wave feminist responses to reproductive medicine; sexual
dualism; social studies of the sexing of hormones; Foucauldian analyses
of sex and power; the social and the biological; the fetal subject;
biopower; men in reproduction; evolutionary arguments and 'natural'
reproduction; and bodily boundaries.
