CENTRE FOR RESEARCH IN THE ARTS, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

Early Career Fellowships 2018-19

Please note that this scheme is intended for Cambridge University and College Teaching Officers only.

DEADLINE: midday (12.00pm GMT) on Tuesday 31 October 2017.

The Early Career Fellowship scheme at CRASSH, jointly funded by the Isaac Newton Trust and the Schools of Arts & Humanities and Humanities & Social Sciences, allows Cambridge University Teaching Officers and College Teaching Officers to apply for an additional term of research leave in order to develop a new research project. Up to ten fellows are appointed each year. The scheme is also open to UTOs and CTOs working in the department of Geography (supported by the School of Physical Sciences).

Eligibility
All UTOs and CTOs who have been in post for less than five years at date of application are eligible, provided that they have obtained prior permission from their Faculty and/or College. UTOs must apply for leave under Statute D,II,6 (b) and the period of leave granted will not be reckonable for purposes of entitlement to sabbatical leave (granted under statute D,II,5).  This is a residential fellowship and successful applicants are expected to spend their period of research leave in Cambridge.

Provision
CRASSH  provides a forum for presenting work-in-progress and mentoring support through regular contact with its visiting fellows and interdisciplinary research community. The value of the award is set at a flat rate of £2,000 per fellow per term (if Easter Term leave is requested, the sum is reduced to £1,000). This amount will be transferred to the fellow’s Faculty or College to enable replacement teaching to be bought in. If the fellow’s teaching is split between a Faculty and a College, it will be the responsibility of the Faculty to negotiate the amount passed on to the college (up to a maximum of half the total).

How to Apply
The deadline for applications is midday (12pm GMT) on Tuesday 31 October 2017.  No paper or emailed applications can be  accepted. In order for your application to be considered by the Selection Committee, we must receive a completed application via the online application system, including letters of support from your two nominated referees and permission from your Head of Department by the deadline.

You can register or log in to your application on the right hand side of the page.  Please contact us via email on fellowships@CRASSH.cam.ac.uk if you experience technical difficulties with the system or if you require further information about eligibility or provision.

The following information will be required:

  • a CV to be uploaded as a PDF file (maximum 8Mb);
  • a brief description of the project you propose. Type your description directly into the box indicated, remembering to Save after each addition/amendment. The system will not allow you to exceed the 10,000 character limit.
  • a sample chapter of published work, to be uploaded as a PDF file (maximum 8Mb).
  • a letter of permission from your Head of Department to be uploaded as a PDF in the field Additional Material. If you are a CTO we will also require a letter from your College.  These should be put on one document and uploaded as a PDF in the field Additional Material.
  • the contact details of two referees (one of whom may be external) who are familiar with your work. We advise that you separately alert your nominated referees of your application and the deadline. Referees are given access to your application via an email containing a link that is triggered by your clicking the Send Email button. Once you've ticked the Send Email button, the system will contact your nominated referee, who must submit their reference via this system by the deadline.  The system will indicate when your references have been submitted. (Applicants are unable to view confidential references.) You may amend your nominated referees up to the point of  their submitting a confidential reference. Once your referee submits their confidential comments you will no longer be able to change their details.
  • To submit your completed application, click on the Submit button at the bottom of the page.  You can submit at any time up until the deadline, provided all fields (excluding referees' comments) have been completed.  You can still log in to view and amend your application after submission.

Please note that uploaded documents MUST be PDF files, maximum file size 8Mb.  The system will not allow you to submit your application without these.
